How can ferries, cargo boats and container ships reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and avoid unnecessary environmental impact? In the future, Roskilde University will step up its collaboration with one of Denmark's major logistics companies, DFDS, to find answers to some of these questions.

DFDS is already collaborating with Roskilde University researchers in the Centre for Maritime and Marine Research on the RORO Green project, which is supported by Innovation Fund Denmark. The goal is for digital solutions to optimise the handling of trailers and containers in ports and thereby reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In the future, the plan is to expand the collaboration with DFDS to include more students in projects or internship programmes.

"I see really good opportunities. It is obvious to continue the collaboration in the digital area, but I also think that the university's knowledge of e.g. green economy, cultural encounters, business management and sustainable transition can form the basis for value-creating collaborations and projects," says Hanne Leth Andersen, Rector of Roskilde University.

DFDSs transition to a net-zero future

For DFDS, establishing partnerships is a key element in the company’s ambition to reduce its climate impact and become a net-zero company by 2050.

"It is important for DFDS to seek out partners and initiatives that can help develop new and better solutions. We have a long history of partnerships in the climate and environmental area, and we want to continuously accelerate towards net-zero and transform our business to be even more digital. The partnership with Roskilde University fits perfectly within this strategy. No one can do everything alone," says Mads Bentzen Billesø, Head of Innovation & Partnerships.

In May, researchers from Roskilde University and representatives from DFDS will meet to discuss possible collaboration projects. In the autumn, DFDS will also invite students to create projects focusing on digital technology.
