The railway connection between Nuremberg and Trieste

DFDS has recently started a partnership with the Turkish – German logistics network Çobantur Boltas to operate a rail connection between Nuremberg in Germany and Trieste in Italy. By combining its ferry activities in the Mediterranean with the new rail service, DFDS can now offer customers a connection between Nuremberg (via Trieste) and the two Turkish cities Pendik and Ambarlı, as well as Patras in Greece.

The block train consists of four double pocket wagons and 26 single flat wagon groups. It can accommodate eight megatrailers and 26 x 45' containers. The train will operate on a weekly basis, and additional departures are planned for the near future.

Peder Gellert, Executive Vice President and Head of DFDS’ Ferry Division, says: “This cooperation is a direct result of DFDS’ newly established Intermodal Competence Centre in Cologne. Working with rail operator primeRail, we aim to develop and provide solutions to optimise transport processes and times by combining our ferry and logistics activities with rail services.

“We see great potential in combining transport modes as we can always choose the means of transport that is best suited to the needs of our customers. It also gives us a unique opportunity to carry out transport operations in a more sustainable way and to reduce our environmental impact.”
