DFDS and Geminor townhall: Logistics for the circular economy

Geminor name

As one of Europe’s leading recycling companies, Geminor transports waste materials to energy plants across the continent. These journeys must happen with speed, precision and compliance. Delays or missteps in transit can jeopardise incineration schedules, regulatory compliance, or even entire business models. And that makes logistics a critical part of the sustainability chain.

As their transport and logistics partner, DFDS recently hosted a townhall for the two companies to learn directly from one another. We discussed the challenges we are facing together, and the solutions we have co-created.

“This is an opportunity for us to discuss topics that are fundamental to our partnership, one of them being sustainability” Kasper Damgaard, Vice President, Head of Strategic Sales, DFDS

Forecasting is the foundation

Efficient waste logistics begins long before the trucks roll. Accurate forecasting plays a foundational role in making the circular economy viable at scale. For DFDS and Geminor, smarter forecasting has become a shared discipline – not only to predict volumes, but to coordinate delivery with site capacity and transport availability.

By aligning forecasts with ferry schedules and local site constraints, DFDS helps Geminor move from reactive problem-solving to proactive planning. This shift not only saves money, but reduces waste-related emissions, improves operational continuity, and supports long-term growth.

Hubs provide flexibility

To increase flexibility in the flow of waste-derived fuels, Geminor has set up local hubs in collaboration with DFDS. These hubs allow for more agile logistics by temporarily storing material when one of the main receiving sites faces restrictions or reduced intake. These intermediary storage points act as buffers in the system, reducing the risk of disruption and supporting more consistent waste-to-energy delivery.

“We're reducing our risk within the supply chain. And we're also being innovative within the hot topic of sustainability.” James Crouch, Operations Manager, UK, Geminor

Multimodal transport fuels sustainability

Waste volumes don’t always follow a plan. Regulatory changes, incinerator outages, or shifts in national policy can all cause material to reroute. In this unpredictable environment, DFDS’s multimodal transport model has proven key to Geminor’s supply chain resilience. With road, ferry and customs services working together, DFDS reroutes freight dynamically without creating disruption. This flexibility ensures waste streams remain consistent and Geminor’s energy production isn't compromised. And the partnership continues to evolve with sustainability in focus. During 2025, DFDS has introduced electric trucks for final-mile delivery in Sweden – an initiative that reflects both companies’ commitment to reducing emissions while maintaining service continuity.

A close partnership with a purpose

The relationship between DFDS and Geminor is more than transactional. It’s a long-term strategic partnership built on shared values of efficiency, innovation and sustainability. And thanks to the discussions at our recent townhall meeting, our collaboration can be even closer, more transparent, and actionable.
